Daily Devotional: February 4 – Harmful Anger

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret – it only causes harm – Psalm 37:8

When does anger become harmful? The bible gives us a clue when it says that anger rests in the heart of fools (Ecclesiastes 7:9). When we accepted Jesus, the Spirit of God made His home in our heart. When anger lodges itself in our heart, it competes with the Holy Spirit for influence in our lives. The Spirit is an awesome master, but anger makes a terrible master. While righteous anger is a tool used by the Holy Spirit to bring about positive change, it is a different matter when anger takes control and relegates the role of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit wars against the flesh and the flesh against the Spirit (Galatians 5:17)  Once the role of the Spirit is relegated, the flesh controls our anger,  and we act in foolish ways that cause harm. We should not choose to hold onto anger that is past its date of usefulness. We should not hold onto anger when the Spirit says to let it go! This kind of anger is no longer justified; it causes destruction in our lives and the lives of others and does not produce the right results. Do you find it impossible to forgive? Are you quick or hot tempered? These may be signs that you have anger lodged in your heart.

I will no longer let my anger control me but let God control my anger
