Daily Devotional: August 2 – An Open Mind

Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law – Psalm 119:18

The bible often points to the eyes when it is speaking about the mind. To have an open mind is to have a mind that is open to being illuminated by the knowledge of God. When we read the bible, it is not given that we will absorb precepts, principles, and truth from it. We can read the word of God without seeing wondrous things from it. But when we choose to put aside our culture, experience, prejudice, and presuppositions; when we have an open mind and ask God to illuminate His word to us; when we consider the words and meditate on it, is when we start to see the wonders from His word and His word becomes a true anchor of our lives. The value of the word of God is priceless, but that value is only revealed to those whose mind and heart are open to it. Pray to God to open the mind of your understanding that you may understand the depths of the secrets of the word of God. Put your thoughts aside and let God teach you afresh.

I will not read the word of God rigidly but will open my mind to the illumination that comes from His Spirit

Daily Devotional: August 1 – Deep Words

Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You – Psalm 119:11

The heart envisions, the mind manages, and the body acts. Therefore, the things we do are influenced by our thinking, and our thinking is determined by what is in our heart. It is not enough to memorize the word of God and have it rummaging in our mind where it battles other ways of thinking that emanate from our heart. We must let His word sink into our heart so that the root of our thinking becomes godly. When the root intentions of our heart and the thoughts of our mind reflect the heart of God, then we are sure to act in a way that pleases God. Otherwise, we will find ourselves mixing godly and ungodly thoughts together and using the word of God to justify our ungodly action, and in so doing sin against God. Have you hidden His words in your heart? Are you living by the word of God or is it something you go to when you need help? Today, allow the words of God to sink deeply into your heart where the enemy cannot find it to remove or contaminate it.

I need to get my heart right before God for my actions to be right before Him

Daily Devotional: July 31 – Blessed Principles

Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD! – Psalm 119:1

The word blessed in the Hebrew means to be imbued with power to succeed. If we want to be empowered to succeed in the things we do, then we must choose to follow the principles that God has already laid out for success in that area. If we want financial success, we must follow godly financial principles. If we want relationship success, we must follow godly relationship principles. If we want to live a holy life, then we must follow holiness principles. We cannot simply decide to practice only one set of principles and expect to have success in an area to which those principles do not apply. For example, just because we are morally principled does not mean we will enjoy financial success, if we fail to apply God’s laws concerning finances. The good news for us is that we do not have to guess concerning godly principles. His principles are clearly stated in the bible and available for us to see. It is up to us to read them, meditate on them, believe in them, and then purpose in our heart to do them.

When I walk in God’s principles, I walk in power

Daily Devotional: July 30 – Prosperity Prayer

Save now, I pray, O LORD; O LORD, I pray, send now prosperity – Psalm 118:25

Did the verse just say for God to send prosperity? Let yourself imagine the reactions of some believers if they heard the prayer that the Psalmist prayed to God? They would surely accuse the psalmist of believing in the Prosperity Gospel. I can imagine that someone else would try to correct the psalmist praying, telling him that it is inappropriate to ask God for prosperity. The reality is that asking for prosperity does not offend God. What a person who is in poverty needs is financial prosperity. What a person who is suffering from depression needs is soul prosperity. God wants us to be honest with Him and ask for the things that we need. The bible says that He will supply our needs according to His riches in glory. So, we see that God has many riches and He wishes to lavish them on us. And as He is sovereign, He can decide not to give us IF we are asking out of a wicked heart instead of a godly heart. But one thing is certain, if we do not ask, we do not receive.

It is my job to ask God, and it is His job to decide upon what I ask. It is not my job to play God and decide on His behalf

Daily Devotional: July 29 – God Heals

I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord – Psalm 118:17

What happens in the spiritual world has influences what happens in the physical world. As an example, when it comes to terminal illness, it has been shown time and again that faith gives a person who is suffering from cancer or some other debilitating disease a higher chance of survival – therefore, we should never take a doctor’s diagnosis or prognosis as the final authority on the subject of survival. We have a God who is Spirit and is sovereign both over the spiritual and physical world. Only He has the final say. So long as He has not decided on our fate, we should stand in faith and declare just as the Psalmist declared: I shall not die, but live. When we stand in faith, it releases the grace (favor and power) of God to accomplish God’s will. If you or someone you know is ill, make sure you or they are surrounded by people of faith and only speak words steeped in faith. These words are the words that promote healing. Do you have someone who is ill in your family. Stay in faith and keep the faith. Let God decide and not your unbelief.

When I am sick, I will not only seek the doctors but God

Daily Devotional: July 28 – Joy in Deliverance

The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tents of the righteous – Psalm 118:15

Some people believe that once they accept Christ, then their troubles are over. That is not the case. There is no such promise in the bible that we will never experience trouble. On the contrary, Jesus lets us know that we will have trails and tribulations in this world (John 16:33). The promise that we do have is that we can be delivered from our troubles when they come. It is the promise of deliverance (salvation) that gives hope and strengthens us to face life’s challenges. No matter what you are facing, you can rejoice because you know that your deliverance draws nearer with each passing day. Unlike those who have no hope, you have a personal relationship with God and can call on Him for help. He will give you the wisdom and guidance you need to navigate the waters and bring you safely through the storm. That God has got your back is a reason to rejoice and be at peace! Because He’s there, you don’t have to worry about the storms that are to come. You can rejoice at the knowledge that you will be delivered because you have set your heart on the One who has overcome the world.

God is mighty to deliver, and He desires to deliver me

Daily Devotional: July 27 – God Our Confidence

It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes – Psalm 118:9

Though we need people, we shouldn’t put our confidence in people. Many people today put their confidence in a ruler or president. They believe all will be well with them only if a particular candidate they support is voted into office. What they forget is that whoever is in office is still only a man. As a man, he or she is susceptible to the same weakness as is present in all man. He must battle his pride, ego, flesh, and the attacks of the enemy. He is not only tied by his own shortcomings, but his hands are also tied by the political system that exists. He is not God and he is not all loving, all powerful and all present. Rather than put your confidence in a fallible human being, it is better to put your trust in our infallible God. When you do, then your future no longer depends on the whims and whams of a man but on the steadfastness and trustworthiness of God. You should put your trust in God because He has never failed, and He will never fail. When you do, you will walk confidently knowing that your hope is real and your future is secure. In whom have you placed your confidence?

When I trust solely in man, I set myself up for disappointment

Daily Devotional: July 26 – Destiny Helpers

The LORD is for me among those who help me; therefore, I shall see my desire on those who hate me – Psalm 118:7

God created us to be dependent on Him and interdependent on each other. Therefore, it is erroneous to think that we never need people just because God is for us. The relationships we develop with people can pay dividends in times that we least expect, especially when God is influencing those who help us. When the Psalmist says God is for him among those who help him, he means that God is the One influencing and directing the steps of his helpers. So, let me ask you: Do you have helpers? Are your helpers being directed by God? While trying to grow your relationship with God, you should also choose to develop your relationships with the people God puts around you. Many times, God will use those you know as instruments of justice and righteousness in your life. Don’t worry about those who hate you; those who do not want you to succeed; those who are jealous of God’s goodness over your life. Your life will be a testimony to those who are not for you so long as you continue to nurture your relationship with God and those He (not you) has put around you.

The more godly people I know, the greater the chances I give myself of getting God’s help

Daily Devotional: July 25 – Special to God

Praise the LORD, all you Gentiles! Laud Him, all you peoples! – Psalm 117:1

Before God was called the God of Israel, He was called the God of Abraham. The promise of God to Abraham was that through his seed, all nations will be blessed. Jacob, who was later renamed as Israel is a seed of Abraham and was the seed through whom all nations are meant to blessed. (It should be noted that we are speaking in the physical sense, as we understand the in the spiritual sense, the seed is Christ). In the physical sense, Israel was lineage through which God chose to reveal Himself to the world (not just one nation). God’s desire was always to make Himself known to all peoples, that all peoples may praise Him. God, though Jesus, who was of the lineage of Israel, has made Himself known to all mankind, who now have access to God through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Thus, when God sees us, He does not see second class citizens but sees all as being reconciled to Himself. When we consider peoples in Christ, we should not consider a particular nation, heritage or culture as extra special, for all are one in Christ. The only thing that makes any of us special is the presence of God in our midst and in our heart– it has nothing to do with where we are born or to which lineage we belong. Don’t let anyone convince you that you are a second-class citizen or they are a first-class citizen. 

All are equal and special before God in Christ

Daily Devotional: July 24 – Precious Death

Precious in the sight of the Lord, Is the death of His saints – Psalm 116:15

Too often, we focus on how people died rather than how they lived. We focus on what happened to their physical being during their death experience and use that judge the love of God. We should remember that in Christ, death is a transition experience much like the metamorphosis of a butterfly. In death, we put off a body corrupted by sin and put on a body that is incorruptible. We go from a passing glory to an eternal glory. During that experience, angels are present, and the eyes of the Lord are fixed on the scene as He supervises the homegoing on His beloved. Therefore, nobody ever dies alone no matter if they were living in solitude and no matter  the circumstance of their death. For as many have accepted the Lord, they are no longer sinners but saints in identity. For saints, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Let the words of the Psalmist give you peace at this very moment. The death of those who know Him is very precious to the Lord. He was there the day they were born and He is there the day their body dies.  

God never leaves nor forsakes us, not when we are alive and not when we die
