Daily Devotional: February 17 – A Glad Heart

There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God – Psalm 46:4a

Are you feeling sorrowful? Is your heart sad? There is a river of words that comes from the throne room of God that can make you glad. This river of words is there to make the city of God glad. The city of God represents the people of God. Jerusalem, which means the City of Peace, represents where we live spiritually when we accept Jesus. Thus, the city of God is a safe place of peace where the Prince of Peace Himself (Jesus) rules. But just because we are citizens of the city of God through salvation does not mean we will be glad. To be glad requires the flow of the words of the Holy Spirit (river) in our lives. If you have accepted Jesus but your heart is not filled with gladness, it is a sure sign that you have ignored the guidance and work of the Holy Spirit in your life. Don’t neglect the Holy Spirit. Don’t put up walls that block the flow of words of the Spirit in your life. Rather, immerse yourself in the river of the words of the Spirit. You will be grateful that you did!

To be glad, I need to submit myself to the Helper, the Holy Spirit

sometimes I’m aligned with that, sometimes not. What is a good way to immerse myself with the words of the Holy Spirit?

      Some things I can suggest

      • Meditate on scripture so that when Holy Spirit speaks you will recognise Him as His words align with scripture
      • Set a practice to acknowledge His presence every day and pausing to invite Him to speak to you- being still.
      • Listening to the audio bible and worship music that is based on scripture.

It is so easy to neglect Holy Spirit as He is a gentleman, so I’m grateful for the reminder.

Thanks for clarifying that the city of God are the people of God.

There is a song by Dunsin Oyekan called The City of God. Part of the lyrics are ‘ Eden is no more a place, I am the city of God. I bring heaven, heaven here and now.’

I had been scratching my head as to how am I, are we the city of God? But in reading this devotional and thinking about it, I also thought that if we are the temple of God because we have Holy Spirit dwelling in us, then being the city of God by extension is not so big a leap to make.
