My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him – Psalm 62:5
There is a difference between anticipation and expectation. Anticipation is something you wish someone will do. On the other hand, expectation is something that you have agreed that someone will do. When our expectation is from God, it means God has already told us that He is going to do something. Hope that is based on an expectation that comes from God is the biblical kind of hope. This hope is sure and never fails. Any other type of hope is just a wish based on our desires. Our hope should always be in Christ – based on His words and unfailing character. This kind of hope is defined as expectation of a sure thing. Conversely, we cannot hold God accountable for something that we anticipate from Him, but He hasn’t agreed to provide. If God hasn’t agreed to it, then what we have is a wish. Do not hold God accountable for your wishful thinking. Rather, make sure your expectation is in Him and then rest assured as you wait on Him.
When my expectation is grounded in Him, then I can rest assured knowing it is done
Hmmm, this is good but it can sometimes be tricky to differentiate i.e.anticipation versus expectations.
On one hand, it’s easy.- what has God said in His Word – His promises? We can expect from that.
On the other hand, there are those who divide this into general promises for everyone at anytime and promises specific to a certain person(s) at a specific time- that can be a little bit difficult to pick apart.
Also when something looks like an expectation in scripture and we expect and it doesn’t happen, it makes us question.
I am glad this helps to start me thinking on whether I am anticipating it expecting and grateful that even the things that are not clear cut offer and opportunity to dialogue with God.
