Redeem me from the oppression of man, that I may keep Your precepts – Psalm 119:134
We tend to judge others based on their actions but judge ourselves based on our intentions. People are quick to condemn a man who steals without considering that he may be stealing because he is hungry and trying to survive. We are more likely to empathize when we take the time to consider the backstory that underpins people’s actions. It doesn’t mean the action is right, but it provides needed perspective that makes it easy to forgive and love. God doesn’t deal with us based on our actions but based on our heart (1 Samuel 16:7). He knows our history, understands our weaknesses, and knows our situation. Thus, He is merciful to our actions. Here, the Psalmist prays that God should take him away from oppression so that He is able to keep God’s precepts. He is only saying what we already know: It is tougher to act like a saint when pressed hard by life. If we truly want people to keep God’s words, we must help by removing the obstacles that cause them to break it in the first place.
God, help me to see things, and people the way You see them
