Daily Devotional: September 8 – Be Mindful

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us! For we are exceedingly filled with contempt – Psalm 123:3

We should make it a practice to think about which way our thoughts are taking us. Should our thoughts get dark, then we need to take those dark thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). The psalmist thought about his thoughts and feelings and realized that he was filled with contempt and scorn for those were prideful. Instead of justifying his thoughts and pushing his feelings aside or on others, he showed spiritual maturity by asking God for help. He knew that being filled with contempt and scorn was not going to do him any good. He knew that sitting in the seat of the scornful only robs him of the opportunity to be blessed (Psalm 1:1). We should follow in the psalmist footsteps by practicing mindfulness – practicing the act of taking a step back to think about our thoughts in order to see if they are aligned with the thoughts of Christ as revealed to us by His word. Practicing godly mindfulness can be the difference between success and failure.
