Daily Devotional: October 29 – Bail or Bless

Do not put your trust in princes, nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help – Psalm 146:3

If you live in a democracy, then you live according to the dictate of what is popular among the people, for people vote in those individuals who spew what they want to hear. If the people’s interest as enlightened by God, then great. If the people stray from godly values, then the politicians stray from those values, and the policies become ungodly. Unlike politics, which is about popularity and public sway, God’s power is not derived from people, nor does He need people to wield power. He can accomplish His will regardless of what people think or what they do. This is why we should put our trust in Him! Governments come and go; regimes rise and fall; but God stays constant and steadfast.

I can either wait for a government to bail me out or wait on God to bless me inside and out

Daily Devotional: October 28 – Lucky or Looking

He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He also will hear their cry and save them – Psalm 145:19

Those who fear the Lord are those who pay attention to Him and gaze at Him – to watch his every step and every move. They do not let their attention stray from His principles and truth. These are the people who call upon Him in truth, for they know Him. These are the people who experience His presence and power in their lives. These are also the people whose desires are fulfilled, for their desires are aligned with His desires. These people have developed a deep relationship with God. They are not looking to get their way but are looking to get out of the way (in humility) so that He can get His way. People call them lucky. But if you ask them, they will say that their lives are not about being lucky but about looking up to God. Let us commit to choosing to be one of these people! Let us look Him so that we may live according to his choice instead of according to chance.

The more I look up to God, the ‘luckier’ I become

Daily Devotional: October 27 – Truth of Prayer

The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth – Psalm 145:18

Why does God answer some prayers while some prayers seem to remain unanswered? The answer is often found in whether we are calling on Him in truth. Since the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth, to call upon God in truth is to pray according to the desire of the Spirit. As we get closer to God, our desires mimic the desires of God and so our prayers are more likely to be answered. [sometimes we have a part to play in answered prayer and sometimes we don’t]. When David says the Lord is near to those who call on Him in truth, he reminds us that God makes His presence felt in the lives of those who pray according to His will (His name). This might be in the form of supernatural occurrences (miracles) or it might be as simple as having a brilliant idea or strategy.

God partners with me and makes His power available to me when I pray according to His will

Daily Devotional: October 26 – Never Forsaken

The Lord upholds all who fall, and raises up all who are bowed down – Psalm 145:14

Have you royally messed up? When we mess up badly, it is not unusual for us to lose our friends, lose our relationships, or even lose close members of our family. No matter how bad things get, we should know that there is one person that will always be there – God. Just as with the woman who was caught in the act of adultery (John 8:1-11), God is not there to condemn us but to redeem us. He is not the accuser of the fallen but the defender of the fallen. He is the one that remains there with His hands stretched out to help us back to our feet. He is not keeping a score of how good or bad we have been. His capacity to forgive, reconcile, and restore is infinite. No matter how bad things may get, know that you are not alone. He is there with you, and He is there for you. All you need to do is take His hand and let Him lead you in His way.

Though my sin may be great, God’s grace is greater

Daily Devotional: October 25 – A Good God

The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works – Psalm 145:9

God is merciful to us because He is good and not because we are good! Some aspects of His goodness are felt by all, regardless of whether we are close to Him or we fail to acknowledge His existence. He embedded His goodness into His creation (the earth) so that all may benefit. As an example, after the Great Flood, He decreed that there will always be seedtime and harvest time so long as the earth remains. He did not say seedtime and harvest time is based on people acknowledging Him. In ancient times, the economy was agriculture-based. Thus, people could survive and thrive economically without acknowledging God. Why would God do this? Is it because He is good and merciful to all. He is kind to the unthankful and evil (Luke 6:35). He wants no one to perish but for all to have the opportunity to know Him. If we are to be like God, then we also have to grow to be merciful to those who are not deserving.

I choose to be merciful to all as God is merciful to all

Daily Devotional: October 24 – A Saved Christian

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable – Psalm 145:3

Here, we read that the Lord is gracious and full of compassion. Previously in Psalm 112, we read that the upright is gracious and full of compassion. As we grow our fellowship with God, we become more and more like Him. His character becomes our character, and His way becomes our way. Jesus says that when we see Him, we have seen the Father. As we grow our fellowship with Jesus, we too become more Christ-like (Christian). In this context, there is a difference between being saved and being a Christian. It is like the difference between a wedding and a marriage. To be saved is an event that positions us in a relationship with Christ. To be a Christian is a journey of becoming one with Him in fellowship. The joys of the being in a relationship with Christ is found in fellowship with Him. You have chosen to be saved, now choose to be a Christian – choose to grow in Him and become more gracious, compassionate, slow to anger, and great in mercy.

When people encounter me, I want them to encounter Christ

Daily Devotional: October 23 – Great Experiences

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable – Psalm 145:3

How wonderful it is for our lives to be a journey of discovering the greatness of God. We position ourselves for such a journey by choosing to focus our attention on Him; by choosing to seek Him diligently. It is then that we can come to understand the patterns of His actions, to understand His principles, and for His ways to become transparently clear to us. It is only then that we may walk in wisdom and grace. It is only then that we experience the greatness of God in our lives. To those of us who embark on this journey, our mouths will declare multiple facets of the greatness of God. To those who decide against this journey, they relegate themselves to only experiencing the great mercy of God.

God is great! Whether I experience His greatness more fully is up to me

Daily Devotional: October 22 – Bless His Name

I will extol You, my God, O King; and I will bless Your name forever and ever – Psalm 145:1

What does it mean to bless the name of God? We can find out by examining the meaning of the words, bless and name. To bless is to empower to succeed. Name refers to the will of God and refers to His attributes. Therefore, to bless the name of God may be defined as follows: To empower God’s attributes to be evident in our lives and in the lives of others by following His will. As an example, one of the attributes of God is a healer. When a person follows the will of God for his or her life by becoming a doctor and then using his or her gifts and talents to provide medical care, that person is enabling the healing attribute of God to be evident in the lives of others. We are all meant to bless the name of God. It is not just about saying his name; it is also about leveraging the abilities we have in a way that brings about good in this world.

I bless His name when I allow Him to show His attributes through me

Daily Devotional: October 21 – Happy People

Happy are the people who are in such a state; Happy are the people whose God is the Lord! – Psalm 144:15

The state that King David refers to here concerns flourishing children and flourishing assets. First, he acknowledges that people who are flourishing tend to feel happy. Then he shares that we flourish when we allow the Lord to oversee our affairs (God means judge or overseer of affairs). For God to oversee our affairs requires that we let go of control and submit to Him. Therefore, to flourish requires humility before God. This means we follow God’s principles, and we do things God’s way. Anything but God’s way gives us the trappings of success without the true and deep happiness that comes with achievement. Only with God can we dream of having it all. All other ways of flourishing come with sorrow. Choose to be happy; choose to flourish God’s way.

I choose to let God lead so I can truly be happy

Daily Devotional: October 20 – Caring God

Lord, what is man, that You take knowledge of him? Or the son of man, that You are mindful of him? Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow – Psalm 144:3-4

King David realized how insignificant man is compared to God; He realized how brief our time is on earth. Still, for that brief period, God looks upon us, watches us, and sends his angels about us to help us. Have you ever wondered if you would do the same if the shoe was on the other foot? Would you pay such close attention to a passing breath, or would you say that paying attention to a passing vapor is a waste of time? For such a mighty, powerful, and encompassing God to give us so much of His time and even send His Son to die for us shows how big a heart He has and how much He cares for His creation. Nothing escapes His gaze, and no detail of our lives escape Him. His attention is on us not to comment about our imperfections but to show us comfort and compassion in His perfect love.

God is loving and caring, and He cares for me.
