Daily Devotional: July 9 – Invest Broadly

He has dispersed abroad; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn will be exalted with honor – Psalm 112:9

Some people think the bible is not practical for this day and age. I say those people are only saying it because they have not understood the hidden teachings of the bible and how it applies. For example, today’s verse hides a very important money lesson in the bible! Generally, Psalm 112 speaks to the characteristics of a man who is blessed and in whose house can be found wealth and riches. This verse tells us that such a man disperses (sows) his investment abroad (overseas). Thus, we see that this man looks for opportunities widely. We see that he is not narrow-minded in his thinking. We see that he diversifies his investment risk exposure. A person who looks far and wide enough will always find lucrative opportunities in the global market. As this passage says, when we have the mindset of one who disperses abroad, we are blessed and have plenty to give to others.

If I look far and wide enough, I will see that plenty of opportunities await me

Daily Devotional: July 8 – Good Man

A good man deals graciously and lends; he will guide his affairs with discretion – Psalm 112:5

Some women say that good men are hard to find. If you are a single good man, that should make you smile because that means that you are wanted. Jokes aside, a good man is not a perfect man – the only perfect man to have existed is Jesus. A good man is a God-man. A God-man is a person who relies on and trusts in God and therefore experiences the grace of God in his/her life. A person who experiences the grace of God in their life is likely to deal graciously with others while a person who doesn’t walk in grace will deal with people lawfully. A gracious person will likely extend mercy and grace while the lawful person is only interested in what a person deserves and what they do not deserve. The world seldom understands the good man and looks at him/her strangely at the beginning. But when they have been blessed by God, then the world praises and reveres the good man. Are you a good man or have you strayed from the One in whom is goodness?

I can be good because He is good and He is the God of my life

Daily Devotional: July 7 – Bent or Straight

Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness; He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous – Psalm 112:4B

Imagine walking on the street and seeing half the people walking bent over and crooked while the other half walk straight and erect. Wouldn’t that be weird? I am sure you would be shocked and slap yourself to wake yourself up from the nightmare. This type of scene is something you might see in a horror movie or in a zombie apocalypse movie. While this scenario is not real in the physical world, it is real in a spiritual sense. Spiritually, there are people who walk upright and there are people walking crookedly. But because we do not see this, we are neither shocked nor give the spiritual scene a second thought. To be upright is to be straight and erect but to be crooked is to be bent. Why choose to walk uprightly? It is the right and natural way to walk as it is the way God created you. When you decide to behave in line with how God made you is when your life changes. By walking upright, you are much less likely to experience those things that people who walk crookedly experience. You get to live a gracious, compassionate, and righteous life. You get to experience hope even when you are going through tough times.

I choose to walk uprightly because that is how God created me

Daily Devotional: July 6 – Road to Blessings

Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who delights greatly in His commandments – Psalm 112:1

Thank God that being blessed does not hinge on things such as into which family we are born, what we did in the past, our skin color, or any other worldly consideration, though the world would have you believe that is all that matters. Praise God that for those in Christ, our blessings hinge on the extent to which we fear the Lord (have an awe of God) and the extent to which we obey (listen intently to Him) with the intention of acting on His instructions! Does this mean that everyone on earth has the chance to be blessed to the same degree? No! What it does mean is that the individual will have the opportunity to be blessed compared to those around them. So, let me ask you: How often to do you listen to what God is telling you? How much respect do you have for God’s instruction? To dismiss the voice of God is to trouble yourself. You can either chase blessings all your life or let blessings chase you by allowing God to influence your thoughts and actions. Respect God so that you can experience the blessings of peace that comes from Him.

As my thoughts and actions go, so goes my life

Daily Devotional: July 5 – Be Curious

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding – Psalm 111:10

Moses was chosen by God to go to Egypt as a Prophet in part because he was awed by a burning bush and decided to turn aside to investigate the reason. To fear the Lord is to have an awe of the Lord. And just like Moses, that awe should lead to us to thirst for knowledge about all things that pertain to God. The knowledge we gain from our curiosity of God in turn leads us to have good understanding so that we can apply knowledge wisely and walk in wisdom. How curious are when it comes to the things of God? Remember that God is all knowing and can shed light on all areas of your life! In which area of life do you need wisdom? Remember to study the word of God afresh in that area and you will start to gain understanding! Don’t relegate God to having impact on few areas of your life (e.g. healing or morality). Go to Him for your relationship, finance, and all your needs. Be curious about what He says in all areas of your life to gain understanding. When you gain understanding, you will begin to walk in wisdom. And when you gain understanding is when you will see your life soar!

I will experience the awesomeness of God in new areas of my life as I study His word with an open heart
