Daily Devotional: July 2 – Caution, Wounded Heart

For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me – Psalm 109:22

The words of David that precedes the 22nd verse of Psalm 109 reveal what vitriol can emanate from a wounded heart. In his wounded state, David’s words did not reveal the heart of God for people. Rather, the persecution he was going through ate at him and turned him into a different person. In this verse, David confesses that his heart is wounded and gives us the reason for his vitriolic words. David’s words remind us of the importance of dealing with our wounded heart rather than brushing our deep-seated pain aside. If we do not deal with our wounds, our wounds will deal with us and pollute the way we relate to other people. If you are acting in a way that is strange to you, or you find that your behavior leads to self-sabotage, then it could be that you have a wounded heart. If this is you, seek wise council and pray to the Lord for Him to reveal the root of your wounds. Then choose to journey on the road to healing.

I choose to heal my wounds rather than use them to justify my behavior.

Daily Devotional: July 1 – Silence the Naysayers

In return for my friendship, they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer – Psalm 109:4

Have you heard of the YouTuber who goes by the name of Mr. Beast? When he helped a multitude of blind people see, he was accused of ‘using’ those people to promote his channel. When he dug wells in African communities, some people sent him messages wishing him dead! In response to these things, Mr. Beast said that if anyone desires to be liked, then they should not have a purpose in their heart to do good, but that they should instead buy a mansion and brag about it. What Mr. Beast experienced is an example of how good is rewarded for evil. Another example of how evil is paid for good is that of the crowd asking for Jesus to be crucified and for Barabbas, who was a murderer, to be set free. Rather than pay attention to hate and let it deter you, you are better off giving yourself to prayer, so you are strengthened to continue doing what God has called you to do.

I will not allow my reputation before man to ruin my character before God.
