Daily Devotional: September 27 – Bless the Lord

Behold, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord, who by night stand in the house of the Lord – Psalm 134:1

To be blessed is to be empowered to succeed. So, how is it then that we can bless the Lord? That answer comes when we consider that we are free moral agents whom the Lord has given free will to follow His ways or to reject it. When out of our freewill we serve the Lord, we give Him the opportunity to succeed through us in the world, and we grant Him the permission to succeed in our lives. In other words, we bless Him. When we serve the Lord, we empower His will to be done on earth. Jesus prayed that the Father’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Because God chooses to partner with man to fulfill His will on earth – think of God partnering with Moses or with Jonah – Jesus’ prayer also relates to blessing the Lord. We bless Him by being in His presence, choosing to humble ourselves, and listening to His will with the intent of acting as directed by Him.

My humility and obedience are a blessing to the Lord

Daily Devotional: September 26 – Key To Unity

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity – Psalm 133:1

Jesus prayed that believers would live in unity during the Lord’s Supper in the upper room. This unity can happen when we submit ourselves to God. Failure to submit ourselves to God brings disunity and disharmony. But if we are submitted to God, then it is God, whose heart is for unity, that ensures that our heart is also for unity. Practically, this means that we focus on the things that bind us together rather than focus on our minor differences. As an example: Does it really matter if people of different cultures have different church traditions from us? Is it worth the disunity? Jesus said that people will know His disciplines through their love for each other (John 13:15). The love Jesus speaks about is not based on merit but comes from the very heart of God. This kind of love is only possible when we decide to grow spiritually and grow in love by becoming a true disciple of Christ. This kind of love is what brings unity.

The key to unity is love

Daily Devotional: September 25 – His Vision

I will abundantly bless her provision; I will satisfy her poor with bread – Psalm 132:15

To be blessed is to be empowered to succeed. ‘Her’ in the context of the verse refers to Zion or the body of Christ (the church). Provision is a complex word that can be broken down into pro and vision. It literally means support for the vision. Thus, the words ‘bless her provision’ means that God will empower the church in support of the vision that God has given it. How do we make ourselves a candidate for blessing? By choosing to walk according to the vision that God has for our lives. When we do, He empowers us in support of that vision. He opens doors and provides for us. But should we choose to do our own thing instead of walking according to His vision, then we operate in our own power instead of His power. We find that things are much harder, and the blessing of our own effort comes with too much regretted sacrifice.

I will work to accomplish God’s vision and not my own.

Daily Devotional: September 24 – Salvation Secure

This is My resting place forever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it – Psalm 132:14

When God decided to dwell in us through the Holy Spirit, He decided to make His home in us forever. That is good news! The Holy Spirit is going nowhere! We have been sealed with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13) who guarantees our inheritance. Our salvation is safe and secure forever, not because of us, but because God desired it. When David said, do not take your Holy Spirit from me (Psalm 51:11), He was talking about the Holy Spirit who was with him and around him. But Jesus says that once the Spirit lives inside of us, then He will abide with us forever (John 14:16). How wonderful! God chooses to dwell in us once we accept Jesus regardless of our performance because of our position in Christ. Think no more about whether you can lose your salvation. Think no more about whether God will take the Holy Spirit from you. His covenant with us is unshakeable and everlasting.

My salvation is safe and secure
