Daily Devotional: October 9 – Shut Your Mouth

Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips – Psalm 141:3

The quantity and quality of our words have an inordinate impact on the trajectory of our lives. When king David says to set a guard on his mouth, his prayer is that his words may be few. He knew he did not need to react and respond to everything people said. There is a reason God has given us two ears and one mouth – we should seek to listen at least twice as much as we speak. When king David asks God to keep watch over the doors of his lips, he is asking that God dictate what comes out of His mouth. When we choose to speak, we should seek to speak the truth (as dictated and allowed by God) and not what we feel or think. The trajectory of our lives wind upwards when God determines when we speak and what we speak. It winds down when we speak our mind. Remember, what is on your mind may be foolishness! Allow only wisdom to give way to foolishness.

Only God will determine when I speak and what I speak

Daily Devotional: October 8 – No Robots Here

Let my prayer be set before You as incense, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice – Psalm 141:2

The things that God set in place for temple worship through Moses in the dispensation of the Old Covenant were types and shadows of spiritual worship in the New Covenant. Here, we see that the burning of incense signifies prayer, therefore the act of praying is as if incense were being burned to the Lord. When the bible says that incense should never cease burning before the Lord, it really means that we should never cease praying or conversing with God. If we think we have satisfied God through the actual act of burning incense alone, then we are sadly mistaken. Rather than burden ourselves with old practices that no longer yield fruit, we ought to examine the heart behind every command and ensure that we are meeting the true intent. Let us not be robots who just follow commands but let us be people who know the heart behind the command and follow it out of love.

I am not going to worship God robotically but choose to understand the heart behind every instruction

Daily Devotional: October 7 – After Gods Heart

Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting – Psalm 139:23-24

This is one of the verses that shows David’s heart attitude towards God. David was keenly aware that God knew Him better than he knew himself. He was aware that he had blind spots that only God could see. He was not content with just living the way he was. He did not say “well, this is who I am.” His interest was in becoming more God-like in his heart, his thinking, his attitude, his words, and his actions. He knew that the root of all things – whether good or bad –  start in the heart. Knowing this, he asked for God to search his heart. He desired to be aware of hidden issues so that he could confess them, repent from them, and obtain forgiveness. Oh, that we too would be men and women after God’s heart just like David. Only by doing this would we grow spiritually and attain a higher degree of righteous living – living in peace, joy, and harmony in our hearts.

My life is a journey of becoming more like Christ as I grow spiritually

Daily Devotional: October 6 – Precious Thoughts

How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! – Psalm 139:17

It is written that eyes have not seen, ears have not heard, nor as it entered in the heart of man what God has prepared for those who love Him (1 Corinthians 2:9). It is written that His thoughts towards us are to do us good and not harm; to give us a future and hope (Jeremiah 29:11). What do you think about when you think about God? Your thoughts should be about a God whose thoughts towards you are always to lift you up, to cause you to succeed in every facet of your life. His judgment towards you is not condemnation but is steeped in love. His judgements are about making decisions concerning you to do you good in the end. We may not know what other people think about us, but God’s thoughts towards us should be settled. His thoughts towards us are awesome; they are beautiful and they are clear!

God’s thoughts towards me are loving and good

Daily Devotional: October 5 – Not a Mistake

Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them – Psalm 139:16

No one is here by accident. God knew us before we were ever conceived, and He has a plan for us. Therefore, no one should call another human being useless. God loved us and thought we were useful to fulfill a purpose and so decided to clothe us in flesh. No one should think they were a mistake because God does not make mistakes. All of us are here because God wanted us here! He wrote our life story before we were born. Our task now is to understand and walk in the path that He has already carved out for us. Remember the words of Apostle Paul to the church in Ephesus: We are God’s masterpiece who were created to carry out the purpose which he planned for us before we were born that we should walk in it (Ephesians 2:10). Friend, the path to excellence, achievement, fulfillment, impact, and satisfaction is the path that God has chosen for us. Choose to walk in it.

I am not here by happenstance but here on assignment

Daily Devotional: October 4 – No Hiding Place

Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? – Psalm 139:7

There is no point trying to hide anything from God. There is no point trying to be dishonest with Him. There is nowhere to hide from his presence – He sees everything. Since there is no fooling God, then why not just choose to be honest with Him. Sometimes we try to impress God by saying the ‘right’ things instead of saying what is truly on our mind or what we believe. God is impressed when we approach Him as a Father who is close by instead a far-away entity that we must bribe with our words. Knowing how much God loves us changes our approach in our relationship with Him. Honesty is a sign that we know we are in a loving relationship with Him instead of fearful relationship. How do you see God? What kind of relationship do you have with Him? Remember, He loves you and accepts you more than you can imagine. You can be honest with Him.

Hiding my true feelings from God is a sign I don’t really know how much He loves me

Daily Devotional: October 3 – Final Authority

You know my sitting down and my rising up; you understand my thought afar off – Psalm 139:2

God knows us inside and out. He knows us so much that He can knows what we are going to do before we do it. He can anticipate how we are going to think. With such knowledge, He can warn us beforehand and help us avert situations and circumstances before they even occur. This is another reason why it is so important to listen to Him – He knows us better than we know ourselves, and He knows other people better than they know themselves. While it is good to get other people’s perspectives, God should always have the final word on every matter. He is pleased when we listen to Him and believe His words. And in the final analysis, His pleasures become our reality as we navigate life expertly with His help.

No one should have the final say so in our life but God

Daily Devotional: October 2 – Word of Truth

For Your lovingkindness and Your truth; for You have magnified Your word above all Your name – Psalm 138:2b

When we shy away from the noise of the world, quieten our heart, and look internally, we discover the lovingkindness of God, and we get to know the truth. The truth of His word that we get to know (as instructed by the Spirit) brings us comfort, certainty, and provides direction, for we know that His word will neither slip nor fail. God is the great I AM. He has many names that are related to His wonderful attributes. The moment he decides something, the attribute of His name that follows His decision becomes magnified and pre-eminent in our lives, thus His word in that area is magnified above all His other attributes towards us in that area and in that situation. How we need Him! How we need to know which word of His is to be magnified in our lives. You just don’t need to know that He is a provider, you need to hear that He is your provider. Yes, He is a healer, but you need to hear in your heart that He is your healer!

The truth of His word sets me free from uncertainty

Daily Devotional: October 1 – True Worship

I will worship toward Your holy temple, and praise Your name – Psalm 138:2a

Is this passage of scripture telling us to pray in the direction of a particular structure as some other religions are accustomed to doing? No! We know from scripture that we are the temple of the living God (2 Corinthians 6:16). We know that the fear of the Lord is key to the worship of God, and that the fear of the Lord is to respect the Lord (that is to gaze intently at Him). Hence, to worship towards His holy temple today is to direct our attention internally towards the Holy Spirit that resides in our heart. By so doing, we can extricate ourselves from distraction, hear the voice of the Spirit of God, and walk in His ways. This is how we live from the inside out rather than living from the outside in. This is how we end up serving Him (worship) with all our heart and soul (see Deuteronomy 10:12).

True worship happens inwardly towards the Spirit and is expressed outwardly through godly actions

Daily Devotional: September 30 – Hatred and Anger

Remember, O Lord, against the sons of Edom the day of Jerusalem, who said, “Raze it, raze it, to its very foundation!” – Psalm 137:7

The golden rule says we should treat others the way we want to be treated. There is also a saying that what goes around comes around. The sons of Edom forgot both when they were ecstatic that Israel was being attacked by the King of Babylon. Over the years, the rivalry they had with Israel had turned to hatred and they allowed their hated to fuel their thoughts and words towards Israel. Though they may have justified it by saying justice was being done, the Lord was not happy with them, and they were punished for their hatred later (see book of Amos). We should not loath people so much that it brings us joy to see them suffer. Rejoicing over other people’s demise is a sign that we have regressed in our relationship with God. Such regression causes us to behave in a way that is ungodly and therefore guarantees that we too endure hardship, because of our ungodliness. Don’t let anger and hatred rest in your heart…why should you hurt yourself?

Hatred and anger are sure signs that I need to strengthen my relationship with God
