Daily Devotional: August 26 – Heated Arguments

The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple – Psalm 119:130

When we are in a heated conversation, we tend to defend ourselves and try to prove that the other person is wrong. Though we may try to find common ground in this period of time, we find it very difficult. We think about things from our own perspective, we try to defend ourselves, justify ourselves, and tear down the arguments of the other person. If we are not careful, we say things that we regret and live with the negative consequences, as those regretted things settle in the hearts of loved ones. Words create worlds! While the entrance of our words can lead our relationships into a dark world, the entrance of God’s words in any situation has the opposite effect. This is why it is important in any relationship to both agree that the word of God will have the final say. In any disagreement, the word of God should be the arbitrator. Instead of excoriating each other during a disagreement, see a disagreement as an opportunity to get you and your partner closer together and closer to God as you explore the word of God together.

I can take the heat off an argument by deferring to the word of God

Daily Devotional: August 25 – Testimony Machine

am Your servant; give me understanding, that I may know Your testimonies – Psalm 119:125

We need to develop an understanding of the word of God if we want to be counted amongst those who have testimonies of the goodness of God. We need to give ourselves to knowing Him and His word if we are to stand a chance of growing our understanding of His will and His way. And we need to be humble before God if we are to increase in knowledge. Thus, humility comes before understanding, and understanding comes before testimonies. Said differently, humility before God releases the grace that leads us to experience and testify of the goodness of God. Conversely, testimonies are excluded from prideful beliefs. Don’t believe that God heals? It becomes difficult to experience the grace of God in that area. Don’t believe that God wants to prosper you? It becomes difficult to testify to His goodness in our finances. Don’t know that God looks at you through the lens of Christ? It will be tougher not to condemn yourself should you fail. Lack of knowledge and understanding keep us from experiencing the sure testimonies of God. May we not exclude ourselves from testimonies because we failed to develop a servant heart of humility.

A heart of humility makes me a candidate to be a witness to God’s testimonies

Daily Devotional: August 24 – Avoid the Drama

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path – Psalm 119:105

Would you go camping in the woods without a source of light? Doing so would be ill-advised! Doing so is asking for trouble as there is nothing to alert you to danger; there is nothing to keep you from stumbling and falling while walking; there is nothing to help you see so that you can do the basic things quickly. Everything you do would be slow, uncertain, and risky.  If you wouldn’t go into the wild without a light, then why would you walk in a wild world without the light of the word of God as a guide? The word of God shows you the path, keeps you from hurting yourself, and warns you of dangers to come. You don’t have to go through life without knowing what to do. You don’t have to continue to hurt yourself through ignorance. You don’t have to go from trouble to trouble. You can simply allow the word of God to be your guide.

I avoid many dramas when I arm myself with the word of God
