Daily Devotional: July 22 – Test the Words

I said in my haste, “All men are liars.” – Psalm 116:11

We are more susceptible to believing the lies of the enemy when we are pressed in life and things are not going well. It is in these times that we say rash things in haste; things that are not true and can be hurtful to the people around us. An example in the bible is when Job was being persecuted by the enemy and his wife told him to curse God and die. She had lost her belief and spoke words hastily to Job. Thankfully his faith was strong, and he rebuffed her words. We should not let our experience dictate what we believe BUT let our belief dictate what we experience. We should not let the words of those who are speaking solely out of their experience sway us no matter how passionate and compelling their words. Rather, we should go to God to test all words to ensure they are in line with the truth. The Psalmist said hastily that all men are liars – something that objectively is not true! The word haste here tells us that it was his immediate reaction rather than a thought-out response. What have you said in haste? What have you done in your haste? Learn to slow down lest you end up making too many regrettable decisions.

The story I tell myself is powerful, but God’s truth is more powerful
