Daily Devotional: May 25 – Mercy Swoops

If I say, “My foot slips,” Your mercy, O Lord, will hold me up – Psalm 94:18

Thank God for His mercy. When we make mistakes, His mercy swoops in so we do not get what we deserve. Yet, we should not take the mercy of God for granted by reasoning that we do not have to strengthen our spiritual walk because His mercy is a safety net. The Psalmist writes that the Lord will grab us if our foot slips. Think about this: just because the Lord chooses to grab us if our foot slips does not mean we should wear inappropriate shoes or decide not to pay attention to where we walk and how we walk – this would be akin to testing God. We are meant to walk in the Spirit and not according to the flesh. Walking in the Spirit leads to life of grace where we experience the glory of God. Walking in the flesh leads to a life wholly dependent on the mercy of God to keep us from destruction. Why choose to survive through His mercy when we can thrive in His grace? Why choose to test God when we can triumph in Him.

I will not use the mercy of God as an excuse not to grow

Daily Devotional: May 24 – Timeless Instruction

Blessed is the man whom You instruct, O Lord, and teach out of Your law – Psalm 94:12

God is eternal and is not bound by time. Thus, He not only knows what happened in the past, He is aware of the present and knows what the future holds. When He inspired the written Scripture, He had the past, present, and future in mind. As such, the instruction He embedded within the Scripture speaks to the past, present and the future. We ought not to miss out on the wisdom embedded in the bible simply because we are reading it like a manual or simply as a history book. Rather, we should open our hearts to receive whatever the Lord wills to speak. God speaks to us out of the Scripture and gives us fresh illumination that suits our everyday needs. This is what makes the bible timeless and relevant forever – God who is timeless and lives forever speaks to us through His words. The bible is different from any other book in that it is not only the inspired word of God for all mankind, but that God chooses to speak to us through the bible. By reading the bible, we not only get to know what He has said, we also get to hear what He is saying as He teaches and instructs us.

I will listen to what God speaks as I study His inspired word

Daily Devotional: May 23 – Your Revenge

O Lord God, to whom vengeance belongs—O God, to whom vengeance belongs, shine forth! – Psalm 94:1

It is tempting to want to take matters into your own hands when people hurt you or hurt those you love. It is tempting to choose revenge today and to ask God for mercy for your actions tomorrow. There is only one problem with taking matters into your own hands…and it is that is you are taking the place of God. When we take the place of God, we miss the mark – either we are too heavy handed in our judgement or we are too light handed. Either way, we experience the repercussion of missing the mark, and we may trigger a cycle of revenge (such as blood feuds or hatred between groups of people and families). When we let God take revenge on our behalf, He does it in a way that holds the people accountable without affecting us negatively. It also opens the door for reconciliation and restoration as God works on them – through the consequences of their actions which they cannot blame on us. So, let us resist the urge to lash out for the pain others have caused us, lest we end up hurting ourselves, trigger hatred, and reduce the possibility of reconciliation and restoration.

I choose to love myself by allowing God to take revenge on my behalf

Daily Devotional: May 22 – Noisy World

The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, than the mighty waves of the sea – Psalm 93:4

In the bible, many times, the waters refer to words and the sea refers to the world. In that context, the noise of many waters represents the noise of many words, and the mighty waves of the sea represents the collective power of the words of those in the world. The collective power of the words of people in the world tends to carry us along or overwhelm us. But rather than being swayed by the words of people or what everybody agrees with in the world, we should be swayed only by the Word of God, for it is only His voice that carries power. Only His words will never fail. When you feel overwhelmed or feel confused, take some time out from the noise of the world. Take a deep breath and go to a place where you can commune with God. Switch off social media and put your phone away. Go for a walk on a nature trail or go on a silent retreat. Make space to listen to God  to hear what He is saying to you.

I will listen to Word of God and not the word of the world
