You answered them, O Lord our God; You were to them God-Who-Forgives, though You took vengeance on their deeds – Psalm 99:8
Just because God is merciful to forgive us does not mean that we will not suffer the consequences of our sinful deeds. This is so important as many people think forgiveness and consequences are mutually exclusive! They are not! Indeed, the bible teaches that God cannot be mocked but that we will reap whatever we sow (Galatians 6:7). The bible also teaches that we may sow in one form and reap in another form, hence just because we don’t reap exactly what we have sown does not mean we have somehow escaped consequence. To me, this is a good reason to decide against doing what we want and solely leaning on God’s mercy while neglecting His grace (empowerment to live a righteous life). If we lean solely on His mercy, we find that we do not live the abundant life God intended; we find that our time on this earth is marked by distress. But when we decide to lean into His grace through humility, we find that we live a blessed life and experience His glory. Yes, we all need God’s mercy, but we should not lean into it in our attitude. Rather, we should lean into His Grace, knowing that His mercy is there to catch us when we fall.
I will lean on His grace today and not just rely on His mercy
