Daily Devotional: July 15 – Living Abroad

When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language – Psalm 114:1

The tribe of Israel spent 400 years in Egypt. Yet, it seems that the people did not learn the language of the Egyptians as the bible says that it was a strange language to them. This reveals to us that Israel did not mix with the Egyptians and imbibe their culture. Is cultural separateness part of the reason the Egyptians felt threatened, especially as the tribe of Israel got larger and larger? Is this why they decided to enslave the people? We cannot say for sure, but we cannot discount this. What can be said is this: Immersing ourselves in the local culture, by learning the local language and understanding the literature, is a way to better integrate into that society and make friends. This does not mean we imbibe aspects of the culture that war against our beliefs. It just means that we take what is good and acceptable from the local culture, making ourselves less conspicuous and broadening our network. Who knows, doing this might even open the door to ministry so that more people are won to the kingdom of God.

I choose to learn about the people in the country I am  living so I understand them better and so they do not view me as a threat

Daily Devotional: July 13 – Life Change

He raises the poor out of the dust, and lifts the needy out of the ash heap – Psalm 113:7

God is in the positive life change business. He does not do this through effort-based behavior modification but through spiritual rebirth and growth. As the Psalmist says – He changes the life of the poor and needy so that they sit amongst princes (Psalm 113:8). It’s not a question of if God can change our life situation, it is a question of whether we will allow Him to do it. The key is for us to be poor in spirit. When we are poor in spirit (humble), it opens the door for the Holy Spirit to do His work in us, through us, and for us. Everything that the Holy Spirit does is good and carries the touch of heaven. As Jesus said, blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 5:3). It is never too late for us to change our life situation. We just need to submit ourselves under the mighty hand of God so that He may lift us up in due time. It is not you that will do it in your own strength; it is He who does it for you through your humility to His will.

I don’t have to continue living my life the way I am. God will change my life when I submit to Him
