Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity – Psalm 133:1
Jesus prayed that believers would live in unity during the Lord’s Supper in the upper room. This unity can happen when we submit ourselves to God. Failure to submit ourselves to God brings disunity and disharmony. But if we are submitted to God, then it is God, whose heart is for unity, that ensures that our heart is also for unity. Practically, this means that we focus on the things that bind us together rather than focus on our minor differences. As an example: Does it really matter if people of different cultures have different church traditions from us? Is it worth the disunity? Jesus said that people will know His disciplines through their love for each other (John 13:15). The love Jesus speaks about is not based on merit but comes from the very heart of God. This kind of love is only possible when we decide to grow spiritually and grow in love by becoming a true disciple of Christ. This kind of love is what brings unity.
